When does a wall crack need a structural engineer? Look beyond the finish
Finish cracks can follow drying and seasonal movement. A crack becomes more consequential when it changes, crosses assemblies, shows displacement, or arrives with movement elsewhere.

Drywall compound, plaster, masonry, concrete, wood framing, and trim respond differently to humidity, temperature, settlement, vibration, and loading. A close image of a line through paint cannot show which material cracked or what the building is doing around it.
A structural engineer evaluates load path and movement; a foundation-repair or waterproofing contractor usually sells a particular scope. Those roles can both be useful, but an independent diagnosis may be valuable before a large repair contract.
The short answer
Document the crack across the whole room and adjoining structure, compare it over time, and note displacement, bowing, sticking openings, floor change, water, and recent construction. Seek an independent structural evaluation for rapid change, horizontal or stair-step patterns with movement, separated framing, or an apparently unstable area.
Identify the material and full path
Trace whether the crack is limited to paint or joint compound, follows a drywall seam, runs through plaster and lath, crosses masonry joints, or continues into foundation or exterior material. Photograph the entire wall, ceiling, floor, openings, and adjacent room.
Record change without hiding it
Use dated photos from the same location with a ruler and mark the ends lightly where appropriate. Note whether a previous patch reopened. Do not repeatedly fill a changing crack, because the repair removes evidence of timing and movement.
Check nearby movement
Look for a door or window that newly binds, trim gaps, floor slope that changed, wall bowing, cabinet separation, displaced surfaces, or cracks aligned through several rooms. Seasonal door swelling alone can be ordinary; several coordinated changes deserve more attention.
Add water, construction, and site history
Record plumbing leaks, roof entry, drainage changes, drought or heavy rain, nearby excavation, removed walls, remodels, new heavy loads, and vehicle impact. Give the engineer plans, permits, inspection reports, and prior repair records when available.
Escalate by movement and consequence
Arrange prompt evaluation for rapid growth, horizontal or stair-step cracking with displacement, bowed walls, separated supports, falling material, sudden floor change, or cracks after impact or unauthorized structural work. Leave an area that appears unstable and use emergency help when collapse is possible.
