Sump pump not working? Test the response before the next storm
Power, a stuck float, blocked intake, frozen or disconnected discharge, failed check valve, or an overwhelmed drainage system can all leave the pit rising.

A sump pump is one component in a larger drainage system. A pump can run while water returns through a failed check valve, or work correctly but be overwhelmed by an exterior drainage problem. Test in dry weather using the manufacturer's procedure rather than discovering the failure during a storm.
Electricity and water share the same area, so damaged cords, extension-cord arrangements, wet receptacles, and reaching into an energized pit are firm stop points. Battery backups and alarms also need their own maintenance instructions.
The short answer
Keep clear of water and electrical hazards, confirm safe power and alarm status, observe the float and discharge path without reaching into an energized pit, and arrange service before heavy rain. If water is rising toward wiring, appliances, or occupied space, treat it as an emergency.
Inspect the area from dry footing
Check pit water level, lid, visible cord and plug, receptacle, alarm, and nearby stored items. Do not enter standing water or touch equipment when a receptacle, cord, or connection is wet, damaged, hot, or improvised.
Confirm the power path
Check the dedicated receptacle and protective device according to their labels without bypassing a GFCI or using an extension cord. If a breaker or GFCI will not reset or trips again, leave power off and call a qualified electrician or pump professional.
Observe the float and pump cycle
Use the manufacturer-recommended test, which may involve adding clean water gradually from a safe position. Confirm the float moves freely, the pump starts before overflow, and it shuts off after lowering the pit. Keep hands and tools out while energized.
Follow the discharge outdoors
Look for a disconnected joint, frozen or crushed line, water returning beside the foundation, or discharge blocked by debris. Do not open a pressurized joint or route water onto a neighbor, walkway, septic component, or prohibited location.
Plan for outage and overload
Ask whether a high-water alarm, listed battery backup, generator connection installed according to code, second pump, or exterior drainage correction fits the risk. A backup is not maintenance-free; test batteries and alarms on their prescribed schedule.
