Is that foundation crack serious? Record shape, movement, and water—not one width
A stable shrinkage crack and an actively displaced wall can both begin as a line in concrete. Orientation, displacement, change over time, nearby movement, and moisture matter together.

No responsible guide can diagnose a foundation from one close photograph. Concrete can crack as it cures and buildings move seasonally, but some patterns indicate pressure, settlement, loss of support, or water-related deterioration that deserves evaluation.
Do not excavate beside the foundation, grind the crack, inject material, or cover it before a changing or displaced condition is understood. A seller, insurer, engineer, contractor, and waterproofing company may answer different questions; for structural independence, ask whether a licensed structural engineer is appropriate.
The short answer
Photograph the entire wall and crack with scale, mark its ends without concealing it, note horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or stair-step shape, check for displacement and related door, floor, wall, or water changes, and seek structural evaluation for active movement, bowing, separation, or rapid change.
Photograph context before detail
Take the whole wall, nearby corners, openings, floor, exterior grade, and drainage path, then a close image with a ruler. Record the date, recent rain, freeze or drought, and whether the crack was previously patched. A context image prevents a harmless surface line from being mistaken for a displaced assembly—or vice versa.
Describe orientation and displacement
Record vertical, diagonal, horizontal, or stair-step form and whether one side projects, rotates, bows, or separates. Measure at repeatable points without relying on a universal internet threshold. Surface width alone does not capture movement or load path.
Look for related movement
Check for newly sticking doors or windows, sloped or changing floors, gaps at trim, separated framing, cracking across multiple materials, leaning walls, or movement at posts and beams. One old cosmetic drywall crack is different from several new symptoms aligned through the structure.
Follow water and soil conditions
Document downspout discharge, ponding, erosion, plumbing leaks, expansive-soil conditions, and basement dampness. Correct obvious safe ground-level drainage defects, but do not assume waterproof coating or crack injection solves structural movement or exterior water pressure.
Choose the right evaluation
Seek prompt structural evaluation for horizontal cracking, bowing, visible displacement, rapid growth, separated supports, or a suddenly changing floor or opening. Leave an area that appears unstable. For stable nonstructural seepage, obtain a cause-specific drainage or waterproofing scope rather than a sales-only injection quote.
