A ground-level gutter and downspout walk-through before the next storm
A short inspection can reveal where roof water is overflowing, stopping, or ending up too close to the house.

Gutters are not just roof trim. They collect a large amount of water and hand it to downspouts, extensions, and the landscape. The useful inspection is a route check: where water begins, where it leaves, and whether it remains near the building.
This is a ground-level observation routine, not an invitation to climb a wet roof or clean elevated gutters without suitable equipment. A phone, a flashlight, and notes taken during ordinary rainfall often identify the next right call more clearly than a quick ladder inspection.
The short answer
Watch where water travels during and after rain. Keep the ground-level path clear, and leave ladder, roof, electrical, and persistent water-entry work to an appropriate professional.
Start at each roof edge
Walk the perimeter and note sagging runs, stains below a gutter, loose hangers, and areas where water misses the trough. Photograph the whole elevation as well as the specific problem.
Follow every downspout to its endpoint
Record whether water is directed away from the house and whether the endpoint is clear. Avoid guessing at buried drains: a contractor can evaluate a failed underground connection without turning the yard into an excavation.
Check for debris from the ground
Leaves visible at an outlet, plants growing from a seam, or water spilling over a low point are useful evidence. Do not reach into a gutter from an unsafe position or work near overhead power lines.
Look inside where water would show first
After rain, check accessible basement, crawlspace entry, window wells, and lower wall areas for a new smell, stain, or dampness. A wet interior area may have more than one contributing path.
Make a scope-specific repair request
Give a gutter or drainage professional your photos, rain timing, and affected locations. Ask whether the issue is cleaning, pitch, attachment, outlet capacity, roof edge, grading, or an underground drain—not simply for a generic replacement.
Sort findings by consequence
Put loose gutters, water against the foundation, or a walking hazard in the prompt-action column. Put cosmetic staining or a routine cleaning item on the next-maintenance list. This keeps a long exterior list from hiding the conditions that can cause damage now.

- Look from the ground during safe daylight. Note overflow points, dripping joints, and whether discharge returns toward the wall or foundation.
- Trace the downspout
- Check for a crushed extension, separated elbow, buried outlet that is blocked, or splash area that is eroding. Do not force a blockage with tools from a ladder.
- Read the landscape
- Mud splash, settled soil, algae, and recurring ponding show where water has been going. A dry day can hide a poor drainage path.
- Escalate early
- Water entry, foundation movement, inaccessible height, damaged fascia, or a system that overflows in ordinary rain is a contractor conversation, not a cosmetic repair.
