Why a GFCI outlet won’t reset—and when to stop trying
A GFCI may refuse to reset because power is absent, a connected device has a fault, moisture is present, another protective device tripped, or the GFCI itself needs replacement.

Ground-fault circuit interrupters are designed to reduce shock risk by interrupting power when current takes an unintended path. A device that will not reset may be doing its job. The goal is not to defeat it but to identify whether a portable load, wet condition, upstream power issue, or failed device is involved.
Some downstream receptacles are protected by a GFCI located elsewhere, and modern devices may not reset without incoming power. Electrical layouts and local requirements vary. Keep covers in place and use a licensed electrician for wiring diagnosis.
The short answer
Unplug connected devices, check for visible moisture or damage, and press TEST then RESET only as the device instructions allow. Do not remove the receptacle or repeatedly force a reset; call an electrician for recurring trips, heat, buzzing, scorch marks, wet equipment, or an unknown upstream fault.
Unplug every accessible connected device
Remove lamps, appliances, chargers, outdoor cords, and other loads from the affected receptacle and any known downstream outlets. Inspect cords and plugs without opening equipment. Do not reconnect a device with damage, moisture, discoloration, or a burning smell.
Look for water and physical damage
Check for a splash, leak, condensation, outdoor weather exposure, damaged cover, loose fit, or discoloration. Do not touch wet electrical equipment or stand in water. Shut off power only if the panel can be reached safely and the correct circuit is known.
Use the device controls once
Follow the label or manufacturer instructions: press TEST, then RESET firmly. Some buttons need a decisive press. If the device clicks but immediately trips again, stays dead, or feels abnormal, stop instead of repeating the cycle.
Check for an upstream interruption without opening anything
A tripped breaker, another GFCI, or loss of supply can leave the device unable to reset. Visually inspect the panel from the front and other known GFCI locations only. Do not remove a panel cover or repeatedly reset a breaker that trips again.
Call for electrical diagnosis
Use a licensed electrician when the cause is not a clearly damaged unplugged appliance, when trips recur, or when the receptacle is warm, loose, buzzing, scorched, wet, or near damaged wiring. Older or miswired devices may require replacement and circuit testing.
