Seven tile-installation mistakes that begin before the first tile is set
Unsupported substrates, missing movement joints, poor waterproofing, wrong mortar, rushed layout, incomplete coverage, and early traffic can undermine a polished surface.

Tile is a finish installed as part of an assembly. The framing, subfloor, underlayment, membrane, setting material, grout, sealant joints, and transitions have to work together. A beautiful tile cannot compensate for deflection or water reaching materials that were never designed to stay wet.
Showers, balconies, exterior work, large-format tile, natural stone, heated floors, and uncertain framing add technical requirements. Use qualified tile and building professionals when the assembly is beyond a documented interior floor or wall detail.
The short answer
Confirm the structure and substrate meet the tile assembly requirements, design waterproofing and movement accommodation before finishes, use compatible listed products, dry-plan cuts and transitions, verify mortar coverage during work, and respect cure times. A tiled surface is not itself a waterproof assembly.
Treat the substrate as the project
Check framing, subfloor thickness, deflection, fastening, cracks, flatness, cleanliness, and approved underlayment. Do not tile directly over loose, contaminated, flexible, or moisture-damaged material. Correct the source of movement or water first.
Design water management
In wet areas, select a complete compatible waterproofing and drainage method before board and tile. Confirm seams, penetrations, curb or transition, slope, drain connection, flood testing where appropriate, and manufacturer's cure requirements.
Plan movement and transitions
Buildings move with temperature, moisture, and loading. Include perimeter, field, change-of-plane, and material-transition joints required by the assembly. Grout is not a universal substitute for flexible movement accommodation.
Dry-plan cuts and verify coverage
Lay out focal lines, edge cuts, fixtures, niches, transitions, and pattern before mixing mortar. During installation, periodically remove a tile to inspect transfer and coverage, especially in wet or exterior areas and with large formats.
Use compatible materials and cure time
Match mortar, membrane, substrate, tile type, grout, and sealant using current manufacturer data. Respect open time, pot life, temperature, and cure before grouting, loading, or water exposure. Keep batch and product records.
