How to replace bathroom caulk without sealing moisture behind it
Removing the failed joint, finding why it opened, cleaning compatible surfaces, drying completely, and choosing the correct sealant matter more than laying a perfect bead over old material.

Bathroom caulk is a flexible joint material, not a repair for a leaking shower assembly. A bead that repeatedly splits can indicate movement, poor adhesion, incompatible products, an oversized joint, or moisture behind the finish.
Before removing material in an older home, consider whether adjacent paint or substrate disturbance could trigger lead-safe requirements. Keep blades controlled and never cut into waterproofing, glazing, tub finishes, or soft wall material.
The short answer
Remove failed sealant without damaging the assembly, inspect for movement and hidden moisture, clean and dry the joint, use a sealant compatible with the surfaces and location, tool the joint, and protect the cure time. Do not caulk over mold, soft material, an active leak, or a joint intended for drainage.
Photograph and diagnose the failed joint
Note whether the bead cracked through the middle, separated from one surface, stayed soft, discolored, or failed after movement. Check nearby grout, wall softness, tub movement, and water paths. A leak behind the joint must be repaired before resealing.
Remove without damaging the assembly
Use tools appropriate for the surfaces and cut only the sealant. Protect tub, tile, stone, glass, and membrane edges. Remove residue so the new product bonds to the intended surfaces rather than a film of old caulk.
Clean and dry fully
Follow the surface and sealant manufacturer cleaning guidance. Do not combine cleaning chemicals. Dry the joint through its depth; applying sealant over damp, moldy, or degraded material can conceal rather than solve the condition.
Choose sealant and joint shape
Select a product rated for the location and compatible with tile, stone, metal, acrylic, fiberglass, or glass involved. Follow width, depth, backer, temperature, ventilation, tooling, and primer instructions rather than using one product everywhere.
Protect the cure and watch the next use
Keep the joint dry for the full stated cure, not only until the surface feels firm. After the first several uses, inspect adhesion and nearby water. A bead that opens again quickly needs a movement or water diagnosis.
