Read the utility bill before buying an efficiency upgrade
Twelve months of usage, rate changes, and seasonal peaks can reveal whether the next dollar belongs in equipment, air sealing, or a smaller habit change.

A bill total combines consumption, rates, fixed charges, taxes, weather, and the length of the billing period. That makes one expensive month a poor basis for replacing equipment. Twelve consecutive statements show whether the house used more energy or simply paid more for the same amount.
This review will not produce an audit-grade savings forecast. It will identify the season and fuel where the largest load appears, which is enough to decide whether to investigate equipment, the building envelope, hot water, or an always-on use before buying an upgrade.

Collect twelve consecutive statements
A single high bill can reflect weather, a longer billing cycle, or a rate adjustment. Record electricity in kilowatt-hours and gas in therms or the unit shown by the utility, along with the number of billing days.
Separate usage from price
Compare this year’s energy units with last year’s, then compare the effective rate and fixed charges. A higher total with flat usage points to price or fee changes rather than a suddenly inefficient house.
Mark the seasonal peaks
A summer electricity spike suggests cooling or dehumidification; a winter gas spike points toward heating and the building envelope. A flat high load deserves a closer look at water heating, refrigeration, pools, pumps, or always-on equipment.
Estimate one load before replacing equipment
Use wattage and operating hours for plug-in equipment, or a professional home energy assessment for whole-house questions. Do not assign the entire bill to the oldest visible appliance.
Set a measurement date
Record the change and compare the same energy units after a full billing cycle, accounting for weather when possible. Savings claims are more useful when the baseline and follow-up are written down.
Choose an investigation lane, not a product
Sort the pattern into cooling, heating, hot water, always-on electricity, or unexplained change. Investigate one lane first and retain the bills, equipment information, and observations. A contractor should be able to explain why the proposed work addresses that documented pattern rather than simply offering the most visible replacement.

- Verify the result
- Write down the change date and compare energy units over a full later billing cycle. Adjust the interpretation for weather, occupancy, rate changes, and other projects completed at the same time.
