A clean lint screen is only the first step. Restricted ducting, crushed hose, and a stuck exterior flap can slow drying and raise fire risk.

A lint screen protects only one part of the airflow path. The connector behind the dryer, the concealed duct, and the outside termination can still restrict exhaust, especially after the appliance has been pushed back or the exterior cover has collected debris.
Inspect only what can be reached without moving gas piping, opening electrical compartments, climbing to an unsafe termination, or disassembling a concealed duct. The appliance manual and local code determine acceptable materials and installation details.

Clean the lint filter every cycle, keep the connector uncrushed, and confirm the exterior flap opens freely while the dryer runs.
Start with the filter and cabinet area
Clean the lint filter before or after every load. With the dryer off and cool, remove lint that has collected around the opening and vacuum accessible dust behind and beneath the machine without disturbing gas or electrical connections.
Inspect the connector without crushing it
Look for a crushed, kinked, disconnected, or visibly damaged duct behind the dryer. Do not push the appliance back so tightly that airflow is restricted.
Watch the exterior termination
Run the dryer and confirm the outside flap opens and air moves freely. Remove lint and debris around the cover. Do not add a screen that can trap lint unless the appliance manufacturer and local code specifically allow it.
Treat longer drying as evidence
Clothes that suddenly need another cycle, a hot laundry room, or a burning odor can indicate restricted airflow or equipment trouble. Stop using the dryer if there is a burning smell or abnormal heat.
Know when the route needs a professional
A long concealed run, repeated blockage, inaccessible roof termination, damaged duct, or gas appliance concern warrants qualified service. Installation and vent materials must follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local code.
Keep a service baseline
After the vent path is inspected or serviced, save the date, service report, visible route notes, and the drying behavior of a normal load. A later slowdown can then be compared with the home’s own baseline. Do not use a shop vacuum, leaf blower, or improvised tool deep in a concealed duct when it could disconnect or damage the route.

- Check the full route
- With the dryer off and cool, inspect the visible connector for crushing or disconnection. During operation, observe the exterior termination from a safe location and confirm that lint has not accumulated around it.
- Stop using the dryer
- Stop for a burning odor, smoke, scorching, sparking, abnormal heat, a damaged cord, or a gas smell. Leave and call emergency services or the gas utility when fire or gas is suspected.
- Use qualified service
- Call when the run is long or concealed, the termination is on a roof, blockage recurs, the connector is damaged, or safe appliance movement would disturb gas, electrical, or rigid duct connections.
