Before adding attic insulation, find the air, water, and wiring problems
More insulation can hide leaks, block ventilation, cover unsafe wiring, and leave major air paths untouched. The attic needs a documented pre-work inspection.

Insulation slows heat flow; it does not stop most air leakage and does not repair moisture. Warm humid air moving through ceiling penetrations can condense in a cold attic even when deep insulation is present.
Attics can contain fragile ceilings, exposed fasteners, heat, dust, animal waste, knob-and-tube wiring, recessed lights, chimneys, and combustion vents. Restricted access or any uncertainty about safe walking and clearances calls for a qualified energy or building professional.
The short answer
Resolve roof and plumbing leaks, combustion and electrical concerns, pest contamination, and required ventilation first. Air-seal appropriate penetrations without blocking intentional airflow, protect heat-producing equipment, and install insulation to a climate- and assembly-specific plan.
Inspect from safe access
Document roof staining, wet sheathing, compressed or displaced insulation, bath or kitchen exhaust termination, pest evidence, blocked soffits, wiring, recessed fixtures, chimneys, and storage. Do not step between framing or enter during extreme heat.
Resolve water and contamination
Repair roof, flashing, plumbing, and duct condensation sources and verify drying. Address rodents, birds, droppings, or suspected asbestos-containing insulation with appropriate professionals. Do not bury contaminated or wet material.
Plan air sealing and ventilation together
Identify ceiling penetrations around wiring, plumbing, top plates, chases, and attic access. Seal only with methods compatible with fire and building requirements, and preserve soffit, ridge, gable, or mechanical ventilation designed for the assembly.
Protect heat and electrical clearances
Maintain required space and fire-rated details around chimneys, flues, non-IC recessed lights, fans, junction boxes, and other equipment. Knob-and-tube wiring, damaged conductors, or uncertain clearances require electrical evaluation before insulation.
Specify material, depth, and access
Use climate guidance and an energy assessment to select insulation type and target performance. Include baffles, rulers, attic hatch treatment, ventilation, service platforms, and a final photo record so equipment and junction locations are not lost.
